Bluefish

The Pomatomus saltatrix commonly known as the Bluefish has a blue back with a black stripe down the back. The average size of a Bluefish is 30 inches in length and 10-12 pounds in weight. The Bluefish has very large teeth and is known to be an aggressive fish. The Bluefish has been known to kill prey they do not wish to eat and occasionally they will bite human swimmers who happen to encounter a school of feeding Bluefish.
Pound for pound Bluefish are one of the best fighting fish in the ocean. There are many ways to go about catching Bluefish when you fishing. If you are lucky enough to have a boat trolling is your best option. Trolling is when you release line out of the back of your boat and then drive your boat slowly throughout the water. You need to make sure to release enough line so that the bait stays under water, but also not too much where you might get caught on the bottom. A common rule of thumb is about ten feet of line. You can also catch bluefish by casting from the shore into the water. The most effective method is to use a floating rig, so the float keeps your bait of the bottom making it visible. When using a float rig, dead shrimp and cut bait is your best choice. When fishing from the shore cast out your line and leave it until the fish bites, there is no need for constant reeling.
Bluefish are a type of Inshore fish, meaning that you do not have to go far to locate them. If you are on a boat you can stay in the close to the shore, or even in the inlet, which is where the sound and the ocean meet. If you are fishing from the shore the beach is your best spot to go. All you need to do is cast beyond the breaking waves which is usually about 50 feet.
Bluefish is not only fun to catch but it is also a very healthy fish to eat. If you decide to keep your Bluefish and cook it, here is a recipe courtesy of
