Sea Mullet

     Sea Mullet, or Mugil cephalus, are a short and fat fish. Sea Mullet vary in colors, but are mainly silver with brown stripes. Mullet are known to be a very oily and slimy fish. The average Mullet rarely reaches over one pound. The North Carolina record for Sea Mullet is three and a half pounds (Malat 1). 
     Mullet are typically an easy catch when fishing in the surf. Fresh bait such as shrimp and blood worms work best when fishing for Mullet. You should not use lures if you are attempting to catch a Sea Mullet because Mullet are seldom caught on lures (Malat 1). Large hooks are not necessary and they will actually hinder your catching of Sea Mullet because Mullet do not have large mouths.
     The best spot for catching Sea Mullet is the beach because the numerous amounts of sandbars and deep holes. Sea Mullet are very common along the North Carolina beaches. Ocracoke, Cape Hatteras, and the Outer Banks are "hotspots" when fishing for Mullet according to Joe Malet. On the beach you do not have to cast far to catch Mullet, Malet states the possibility of Mullet literally being at your feet while you fish (Malat 1). 
     Sea Mullet may not be the biggest fish, but many fisherman do catch Mullet for their meat. Here is a recipe courtesy of "AssociatedContent.com"


Ingredients
1 lb sea mullet (whiting) fillets
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1⁄2 lemon, juiced
1⁄4 tsp salt
dash pepper
1⁄2 lemon, sliced
fresh parsley

Directions

Butter a glass baking dish and arrange fillets in the dish. Combine the lemon, butter, salt and pepper and drizzle over the fish; reserve some for use when serving. Broil on highest rack for 8-10 minutes or until fish flakes easily. Garnish with lemon slices and parsley. Serves 4.
